Lessons Learned

We found out that you can catch and take home as many rock crabs as you want regardless of size or gender. So on our way to the gym the other night we dropped a few cages as the tide was coming in to see what we could get. Brian and Jackson went back to the dock while I finished my work out and pulled up several rock crabs and one large Dungeness crab. Brian was determined to see how they tasted, so home they all went and our adventure began.

Despite what we heard about 'the smell' and 'it's best to cook them outside', we went ahead and boiled those bad boys in the house. Well, after about 20 minutes our entire upstairs and down stunk to high heaven of crab poop. The smell was so nasty that I couldn't even attempt to eat the meat. Brian gave it the old college try and said they were actually pretty good, but he couldn't get the smell off his hands for a day or two.

We opened all the windows and turned on the fans, washed the dishes in addition to scrubbing and bleaching the entire kitchen. Brian also took at the remains out to a dumpster several blocks from our house to rid us of any lingering smells. Luckily for us, by morning the smell cleared up, but we have no intention of cooking crabs at home again. We now have a new appreciation for crab meat that is cooked, pulled from the shell and prepared in a nice meal at restaurants.

Ugh! And you did this while you are pregnant?
Glad to hear all is fresh & sanitary once more.

Love Jackson's face looking at one.

I can only imagine the smell!! I can't believe you didn't totally throw up!! Good for Brian for trying the meat...somebody needed to after all that!! I am with you though...let someone else do all the work...that's why we pay for it!!!

We actually had a Crab Fest at our friends house tonight.

Although, she purchased just the legs and didn't have to go through your grueling process. You're a trooper!!

They had crab, shrimp, red potatoes, and corn on the cob seasoned in lots of yummy spices. It was DE-LISH. So if you ever want to do it the easy way and purchase some crab legs, I've got the perfect recipe for you....sans the nasty smell and hard work!!
